The idea of seeking God from this passage is to “be early” with the implication of “being on top of things” where the emphasis is on preparedness.
O God, You are my God;
Psalms 63:1
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
where there is no water.
SEEK: šâḥar; a primitive root; properly, to dawn, enquire early, rise (seek) betimes, seek diligently
before the usual or expected time; early. “next morning I was up betimes”
“Betimes” is an interesting word. What is means is being up before the “usual” or expected time. Being prepared to be in pursuit of God early comes from a hungry heart that is in search of “more” of Him.
There is also the revelation and realization that there is a lack of heaven on earth – a need for more. There is “no water” apart from Him in this land. We are in desperate need of the supply of the Spirit that bring refreshing, replenishment and a spiritual recharge to the batteries of our life. We thirst.
We long for the Lord in a dry and thirsty land. This speaks to the corporate lives as well as the individual life concerning the need for the water of the Spirit to bring forth life and fruitfulness. “I need thee OH I need thee… every hour I need thee.”
Thankfully in Psalm 36:8 we see how God “make us to drink of His river of pleasures”. He is the only One Who can supply this much needed refreshment and overflow to our lives. We should always ask the Lord to “overflow my cup and fill me up” as we understand our great need for Him.
